Other words for nard is spikenard, nardin or muskroot. Nard is a flowering plant that grows in the Himalayas mountain region of China. It is also found in the northern regions of India. It has several uses. In India nard oil is often chosen as a valuable perfume. It may also be used as an incense, sedative or herbal medicine. This amazing plant grows at higher altitudes in the mountain regions of these two countries.
Nard (Spikenard) is found throughout the bible. It was used as an incense in the Tabernacle in Jerusalem. A pound of this pure oil was used by Mary, the sister of Lazarus to anoint the feet of Jesus. Judas was upset because it could have been sold for a years worth of wages. Romans used spikenard as a flavoring in foods, although it was used sparingly. It was also used at one time as an ingredient in wine and beer.
Spikenard is obtained through the distillation process by using steam. A way to make sure that any oil is 100% pure, is by what is written on the label. If it says “not for consumption” or “not for internal use”, then it is not a pure oil. Chemicals still remain in the product if it cannot be ingested. It took me a while to find pure spikenard, but eventually I was able to locate some. As soon as I opened the bottle and rubbed one drop on my wrist, the whole room was overcome with the scent. After a few moments I felt relaxed and was experiencing a type of peace that I cannot describe.
The earthy, musty (musky) scent lingered on my body for over 24 hours. This was my first experience with any type of pure, distilled oil. I thought that it would be interesting to smell the oil that was popular in biblical days. There is a room in my basement where I routinely go to relax and meditate. It already has the distinct aroma of spikenard. So far, only about one person out of ten has mentioned that they do not like the fragrance.
If you do not like the smell of musk oil, I do not recommend trying nard. Musk oil is derived from the glands of musk deer. It also may come from the muskrat, musk duck, muskox, musk shrew, or the musk beetle. Crocodiles have two pairs of musk glands. I personally do not like the smell of musk oil, but after a day or two, I went from not liking the smell of spikenard to enjoying the fragrance. I feel better about using oil that is derived from a plant rather than inhaling animal gland fragrance.
I was told that there are several other pure oils that contribute to good health, such as peppermint (for upset stomach), frankincense, and a multitude of other oils. I will be sampling various oils over time. In fact, during my research I came across several testimonies of how certain oils have miraculously “cured” different kinds of illnesses.
There is a wide range of natural health products available. I have decided to research the products before I try any of them. It is just another step toward my conversion into green living. If you are interested in any of these oils, please leave your contact information in the comment box. I will contact you to answer any of your questions. So far, nard oil has been a unique and pleasant experience for me.
